Dua-e-Reem, Shoaib Mansoor and Mahirah Khan

This International Women’s Day, Shoaib Mansoor and Mahirah Khan released a Reem Rice sponsored video, titled Dua-e-Reem and it has taken the nation by storm. Mansoor’s cinematography and art direction are incredible, and the poetry and message of Dua-e-Reem is exactly what patrons of patriarchy need to listen. It showcases what internalised misogyny looks like and what women of today want from their marital life.

I loved the video, so sharing it here. I loved the lyrics even more, so took the pains of transcribing it for you and me.

Lab pe aave hai dua ban ke tamanna meri
Zindagi amma ki surat ho khudaya meri
Mera eman ho shohar ki eta’at kerna

Lab pe aati hai ban ke dua meri
Gher tou unka ho, hukumat ho khudaya meri
Mai ager batti bujhao ke andhera hojaye,
Mai hi batti ko jalao ke ujala hojaye.

Kerni aati ho mujhko maramat unki

Woh ho Shaheen tou mowla mai Shaheena hojao
Aur kameene ho tou mai barh ke kamina hojao

Unko roti hai pasand aur mujhko hai bhaave chawal
Esi ulfat ho ke hum roti se khaave chawal
