They have been there when no one was – they need nothing but hot water, and are filling and delicious. Why would I look beyond my dear cup noodles when I need a quick meal, without any effort?
Because I don’t want to damage my heart and kidneys. Yes, you read that right.
Here’s a little background and the reason why you need to break up with cup noodles. Forever.
I have moved into a new apartment, and it will take us a while to get everything in order. Generally, when you rent an apartment, the kitchen is moderately equipped. Basics like cabinets, shelves and sink are already in place, and you are expected to get your stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, etc. If you move into a luxury apartment, like one of the Admirals Cove townhouses (see them at https://www.admiralscovealameda.com/), then you can expect to have everything waiting there for you.
Here, we got four walls. It was a surprise for us but a norm otherwise. So until we furnish the kitchen, we rely on takeaways, restaurant meals, fruits and good ol’ cuppa noodle.
Given the current situation, I am trying to eat healthy and counting calories (FitnessPal is a rock star) once again. And this is how I discovered the devil. Last night, I made a delicious cup and while entering it into the food log, got an alert:
This food contains 2400mg of sodium. Your daily limit is 2300mg.
This small cup alone would exceed my daily limit of sodium intake; combined with everything else I have in a day, the final number would be shocking.
Why is excess sodium bad for you, you ask? It’s evil because it causes water retention, increases blood pressure and adversely affects your kidney function. A recent study by Harvard College confirmed that eating too much sodium makes it difficult for your kidney to keep up with the excess sodium in your bloodstream, which in turn pressures your heart and blood vessels. Bad news.
So the next time you pick up a cup from supermarket shelf, take a moment to think if you really need all that salt and sodium in your system. Everything is good in moderation, so choose wisely.
Be well Xx
