Alessandro Michele. This name alone excites fashion enthusiasts and aficionados around the world. When he took to runway last year once again for Gucci for the fourth season and sent down a collection that made people afraid to blink and miss a moment of eccentric juxtapositions, we knew he’s the one to look out for. He has reinvented Gucci in the real sense of the word. Gone is the emblem predictability, to be replaced by art, playful experiment and fashion that defies norm.
His invites to the show made quite a few headlines, though even that couldn’t prepare the audience for the spectacle he put at Milan Fashion Week 2017. He sent down 120 looks, highest ever, looking forward to the future with eminent nostalgia. Every single look narrated a story, of years gone by and debauchery, of riches and rags, and of opulence and famine. It was almost emotional, and refreshingly unrestrained. All looks were sewn together with sheer artistry, creating an aura of fluidity and coherence. From gypsy skirts to camel coats, tattered denim to crafty tailored suits, boho fringe to avant-garde lavender dresses in whimsical Chinese silk, it was a debonair lady’s closet who has managed to live for a 100 years.
Styling for every look was done with incredible attention to detail. Terry cloth headband, dainty chains, chunky metal, dazzling hardware and orgasmic collection of shoes were put together to create 120 stories for Gucci’s runway at Milan Fashion Week.
It was by far the best of this year’s fashion week in Milan, and Michele deserves no less than a standing ovation.
