A recent weekend trip to Belgium got me hooked to waffles. Yes I know, I am way too late to arrive to the party. But I finally have! I had them for three consecutive days (to make up for all the lost time), and the addiction made me look for them once I returned to Cologne – so predictable.
Fast forward two weeks…
A quiet night and hunger pangs took me Venloer Strasse, and eventually, Yogissimo. Located at the corner of the street, the cafe is fashionably designed with frozen bar at the entrance and quirky table setup at the rear end. All walls are distinctly covered with eccentric wallpaper, from old newspaper print to number plate collage and faux bricks. Also, every table has a different set of chairs, which further lends the place a jovial and interesting look.
Coming down to the most important part – waffles. Like most waffle-serving joints, you can order a custom creation or opt for one of the bestsellers. I went for a pre-designed waffle, with crunchy base, a ladle of Nutella and sliced banana. It came with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and my name in chocolate 🙂 YUM!
Despite the hour, waffles were freshly made and served with a smile. I could actually taste the freshness and quality of ingredients, and it was impressive. It almost brought back the memories of cobbled streets and fresh waffles served by bearded men travelling across the country with waffle making setup on the wheels.
P.S. Yogissimo would serve as a fantastic venue for an editorial fashion shoot. Different elements scattered across, like a huge brass wall mirror on one end and book shelf on the other makes it an apt location; plus, you can indulge in scrumptious waffles, frozen yogurt, coffee, smoothies and shakes in between shots. Win win!
